The etymology of the word DUKE.
A duke is a member of the nobility, historically of highest rank below the monarch, and historically controlling a duchy or a dukedom. The title comes from the Latin Dux Bellorum, which had the sense of "military commander"....
I have to say it comes from Albanian: me u duk, me u shqu, te jesh i dukshem=to be noticed, distinguished, famous
seem | dukem (fprr u duka, dukur) |
A person who is subject of other people sights, for his military/leader qualities in Albanian : DUKET mbi te tjeret, dallon.

Re: The etymology of the word DUKE.
Latin dux has its root in ducere meaning to lead. This root goes back to Proto-Indo-European *deuk which means not only to lead but to pull or to draw. Albanian has this root in the word nduk. English retains the word in the words tug and teem. I don't know the etymology of Albanian dukshëm so it may belong with the same root. I just haven't seen any etymologies of that word.
