The great Magical Papyrus in Paris (=PGM 1:167-68)

Prayer written on the tablet:

“I conjure you three times in the name of Hecate PHŌRPHŌRBA BAIBŌ PHŌRPHÔRBA (fjale magjike) to make X loose the fire in here eyes or become sleepless and no one in her mind except me, Y."

Çfarë simbolizon kjo.Y ketu??Zotin?.

"I conjure you by Korê, who became the goddess of three-forked roads and who is the true mother (write the names of any daemons) whom you like: PHORBEA NĒRĒATO BRIMŌ DAMŌN. BRIMŌ SEDNA.DARDAR. all seeing one, IOPĒ, make X be sleepless because of me forever and ever.”

Çfar isht kjo mësipër,formul magjike apo formul q’thuhet kur vdes nji person???

Sot kuptohet si formule magjike nga përkthyesit e specializaur, por vazhdojme ne anglisht..

The tree-forked roads outside ancient cities were useful for magical purposes because there were usually tombs nearby, and Hecate as well as Korē, the goddess of the underworld, were thought to appear at these places at night. Both Hecate and Korē are invoked in this spell, along with some more obscure deities and daemons (although Brimō is often identified with either Korē or Hecate).

A kan lidhje Korē me t’Shqipes fjal.Koré.Korja e tokës gjeol. shtresa e fort n’pjesën e sipërme t’rruzullit tokësor…??

A ka lidhje Brimō me t’Shqipes fjal.brim(ë). Zgavër n’tokë, fig. vend i fsheht(ë), qoshe, skut(ë),Vrim(ë),grop(ë)…??

The Exorcism spell in the Great Magical Papyrus of Paris (PGM IV) lines 3007-86 is famous/notorious for its reference to Jesus the God of the Hebrews; this is usually regarded as a bit of peripheral syncretism but I was surprised to notice in the photographs of this spell in Deissmann’s Light from the Ancient East the repeated use of one of the nomina sacra namely θς, θν, and θυ for θεος etc., God

The nomina sacra are generally held by scholars to be of Christian origin indicating that the Christian influence here goes deper than just one phrase.

We also find in lines 1227-64 of this papyrus another Exorcism with the invocation Hail God of Abraham Hail God of Isaac Hail God of Jacob; Jesus Chrestos the Holy Spirit the Son of the Father who is above the Seven who is within the Seven. Bring Iao Sabaoth may your power issue forth from him NN until you drive away this unclean daimon Satan who is in him. Again this indicates a strong influence of (heterodox) Christianity.

The magical papyri mostly date from the 3rd century CE and later. They have been used by scholars notably the late Morton Smith in Jesus the Magician as a source of parallels for the miracles of Jesus. If, however, the spells (and particularly the exorcisms) have been significantly influenced by Christianity then some of the parallels may be a result of pagan magicians borrowing from Christianity rather than the influence of pagan magic on the Gospel stories.
